The Water Dragon

Nobody ever asks the rocks... When they do, they study us, worship us, break us open to see what was inside. Looking for magic? Pretend we had some we didn't?

Matter of fact we do. But not the kind you had searched for... Rocks need time, a lot of it. Put enough of us together and things happen. That's it, easy, simple.

I was on my own, that's the first memory of me. Don't ask me how the others came, rocks don't decide much... And this is not that kind of story. I'm too old to tell it and you have too little time to learn it.

At this point all of us have heard about dragons. Some of those versions are hilarious. Some are atrocious. But if you look at the rocks, you get the story right.

The first thing we made was a drop of water.

A few thousand mornings later there was a pond, then a tree, then our own climate. I told you, rocks just need time.

Then one morning, something tickled us.

We couldn't see it. It would come back for another thousand mornings, we'd wake up laughing not knowing why. A giggly morning, one could say.

Another odd morning came, with more fog than we had ever created. Thicker than anything we've ever felt. We woke up thinking we had travelled during our sleep...

That morning he was ready, startling us all, splashing us with water when he rose from the pond. He still looked like water, until he touched the air. He is now soft blue by the sun, dark by the moon and transparent by the water. It was our dragon.

I spent a long time believing we were the luckiest rocks that ever existed. But I heard a giggling one morning, I recognized it instantly. I didn't know if I was sad or happy about it, but soon I got used to hearing more rocks, having more dragons over and a lot of fog.

I was alone. I thought that was just a rock thing, just like you I didn't know the magic. But I had nothing but time, in fact any of us could have told you this story, if you could just be patient. This one just happened to have started with me, a simple rock.
